Spring Gardening

With the promise of sunshine and high 70 degree temps, I will definitely be doing some gardening this weekend.  Wherever you may live, I hope these pics bring a little bit of inspiration to you.

Hello Monday!

Wishing all my dear readers a Happy Monday, and wanted to say “hello” since it’s been awhile since my last post.  I gave my notice to Restoration Hardware (retail hours are a killer), and have been working on several projects before, during, and since then.  Thought I’d share a glimpse of what I’ve been working on for the past couple of weeks.

A combination of two travertine finishes were used to create a checkerboard effect in a master bath project I’ve been consulting on.The client loves Saltillo tile, but the thickness of it presented an installation issue, so she opted for this beautiful porcelain that will be much easier to maintain.  Looking forward to sharing the final results on this project!    Took a three-day weekend with my hubby and friends to visit Palm Springs for the first time.  We went to the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament and were able to see some of the tennis greats play such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal (pictured below).  Went on a shopping spree with a client and found this gorgeous solid Elm coffee table.  It looks fantastic in their home, along with the hassock below (we installed two).  A great way to add additional seating!

I’m also anxious to share this installation, but unfortunately the lovely textured rug we ordered is on back-order until June.  It’s such a big part of the overall design concept that I can’t share pics until it’s completed.Met with another client on a master bath remodel; seems everyone is wanting to remodel their master bathrooms right now.  She’s requested white cabinetry and I rarely get this opportunity, so I’m thrilled!Took some time out and spent a morning with my mom at the nursery to fill-in some of the
“holes” left from the freezes we had this winter.   And finally. I put together a faux succulent arrangement as a wedding gift for an old friend who loves Western-syle decor.  It amazes me how realistic faux succulents look these days!

Have a great week!

Reclaim … Sweet Salvage Style

“Reclaiming Style” was the name for the Sweet Salvage February event.  They never disappoint, and as always, there were a boat-load of wonderful items.

Included were these funky bicycle wheel pendants.

And this birdcage-style chandelier … love the irony of a birdcage fabricated out of chicken wire.

Touches of red were peppered throughout such as this Parisian-style chalkboard, and …

this No. 10 Mercury jar.

The base of a piano stool was re-purposed as a candlestick holder (displayed with plant on top).

There’s always a great selection of industrial gauges and glass cloches.

I thought these metal cubbies would make a great storage piece in a potting shed or artist’s studio.  The EAT sign would be awesome in a loft to define a dining area.

The popularity of burlap is still big right now.  Wrapping it around recycled cans and tying them off with twine is a creative and inexpensive way to add to your decor.

Romantic vignettes are always present at Sweet Salvage.

As are pretty chairs.

Love this outfit!

Combined with vintage flatware, there was a certain Anthropology vibe going on.

Touches of foliage soften the metal pieces throughout and bring promise of spring.

Have you ever re-purposed an item or thought about it?  If so, please leave a comment … would love to hear from you!

Best,

Teresa

Sweet Tooth

“Exercise is a dirty word… Every time I hear it, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.”     ~ Charles M. Schultz

If you love chocolate as much as most people do, you may enjoy checking out one of these beautiful shops …

The recently-opened Les Marquis De Ladure’e in Paris offers a huge selection of chocolates along with color-enticing marcarons.

A quick flight from Paris to London will get you to Notting Hill’s Melt, where you can indulge in one, or two, of their daily-made truffles while watching the artisans at work.

Appearing much like a giant chocolate bar residing over the long marble island, 100% Chocolate Cafe is located in Tokyo.

As one of the most esteemed chocolatiers in Belgium, the Art Deco influenced shop of Mary is enhanced by gilded walls.

Architect Sam Trimble created a sleek futuristic space for Japanese chocolatier Royce’ in their Madison Avenue shop.  If you prefer salty over sweet, you may want to try their chocolate-covered potato chips.  Betcha can’t eat just one!

“Handcrafting the world’s greatest chocolate is our life’s work.”  And so goes the passion of Rick and Michael Mast of American craft chocolate-makers Mast Brothers in Brooklyn, New York.  The space was well-designed and curated by these talented brothers; reflecting the fact that the American spirit is still alive and well.

Salvage Inspiration

In November I wrote a post (here) about a book that will be published later this year.  Our home will be one of those featured, and I’m happy to share with you the new cover has been released by W.W. Norton.

Based on the photo I’ve seen (of which I cannot share), photographer Susan Teare did an amazing job.  Here she is enjoying a cup of coffee in Seattle along with author, Joanne Palmisano (pictured on left).

You may recognize Joanne’s pretty face from the DIY Network.  She writes her own blog as well, Salvage Secrets.  This lovely lady does not come up for air!  Her latest role is a monthly contributing editor to Williams-Sonoma’s blog Cultivate.  Check out her first post on salvaged sinks.

I’ll keep you posted as more news on this publication becomes available.

Happy Friday … have a fantastic weekend!

Best,

The Art of Giving Gifts

Let’s face it.  In this age of Amazon, eBay, and an endless multitude of online catalogues, purchasing power is at our fingertips 24/7.  At any time day or night with the simple click of a mouse … wallaa!  Instant gratification.  While this may free up our busy schedules and make life more convenient, the actual physical experience of searching for and discovering the perfect gift has become lost in the process.  In the bustle of just trying to stay up with life, the art of gift-giving has dissolved into a whirlpool of on-line ordering.

This past Christmas we visited our daughter, Shannon, and her family in Georgia.  Purchasing our grandsons’ gifts on Amazon and having them shipped direct certainly removed the headache of dealing with the post office in December.  Yet something was missing.  In past years, David and I would spend a day shopping, stop to enjoy lunch, and smile at the end of it knowing our girls would giggle with delight as they ripped open their meticulously-wrapped packages.

With the exception of watching the boys open their presents, the whole experience of shopping and enjoying a day together was lost.

Recently I received a gift from Gayle (my youngest daughter’s m-i-l).  As I carefully peeled away the bright pink layers of tissue, a hardbound book with a beautiful black jacket and a photo of a single nest was revealed.

Inside Gayle had simply written:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           To Terri                                                                                                                                                  “To help you recognize the occupants of the nests you love … Hope you enjoy it!”                    Happy Christmas!                                                                                                                                 Love, Gayle

A huge smile came across my face.  Not only was this gift given with love, but with thoughtfulness knowing of my passion for collecting nests.

I’ve witnessed Gayle’s gift-giving many times, and it’s always fun to see the reaction of the recipient as they unwrap another treasure thoughtfully selected for them.  There’s an art to this, and Gayle most definitely has it figured out.  How fortunate I feel to be one of those on the receiving end of this.

How about you?  Do you have a favorite place you purchase gifts from?  I’d love to hear!

Happy Shopping!

Thumbs Up!

For the past two days I’ve helped my youngest daughter select art and accessories for their dental office.  On Tuesday, I ran out the door without breakfast and was famished by lunch time.  Her hubby, Ryan, suggested we stop and grab something from the local gas station.  MoiGas station?  I don’t think so.  But knowing that he and Rachel are both foodies, I trusted his recommendation.

Definitely not my standard lunch spot.

As we stepped inside, my apprehensions were put to rest.

I’ve been inside a lot of convenience stores throughout my life, but never one that actually paid heed to current decorating trends.

And certainly never one that sold expensive wine!

We placed our order: blackened catfish, house-made cole slaw, and french fries.  Yum!

The banquettes were fabricated from wood pallets placed on casters, and were surprisingly comfortable.  Rachel and I agreed these would be so cute in a children’s play room (suggestion:  either use outdoor fabric for the cushions, or have them laminated for ease of cleaning).

The biggest surprise of all though was when I sat down to eat lunch, and recognized the large fixture hanging above the dining area.  Restoration Hardware in a convenience store!  Not just any chandelier, but the large orb chandelier.

So if you find yourself searching for a place to have a bite in Scottsdale, check out Tom’s Thumb Fresh Market.  I think you’ll be as pleased as I was.  Not only were they voted a “Best New Restaurant” by Phoenix Magazine, but they serve dinner too.

Happy Dining!
